Family, friends mourn death of Arlington teen

ARLINGTON -- Kevin Wood was a charmer and a prankster. He liked to laugh and loved to share it with everyone around him.
But his infectious smile and sense of humor were missing from his Martin High School classes Thursday and Friday.
On Wednesday, Wood, 14, was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup while he was riding his bicycle along South Bowen Road. According to a police report, when he turned to talk to a friend walking beside him, he veered off the sidewalk and into traffic. He died Thursday at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth.
"His class today was very sad," theater teacher Sharon Miller said. "The kids took Sharpie markers and signed his chair as a tribute to him. They were pretty wiped out over the loss. He was just precious. All the girls had a crush on him. He was so charming."
The latter trait made him perfect for the role he was scheduled to play Friday. He would have been the legendary Prince Charming in a version of Cinderella that he worked on with his best friend, Kimberly Seward. The story crossed the fairy tale with the popular reality show The Bachelor, in which a man must choose between potential brides, and the MTV show Punk'd, in which celebrity prankster Ashton Kutcher tries to make other stars lose their cool in public.
Seward said that she and Wood had been friends since fourth grade and rode the bus together daily during elementary school. She often helped him with his pranks.
"I will say that we never did anything illegal. They were never bad," she said. "He was the best kid, most polite kid. He cared about everyone."
His compassionate nature led him to become a birth coach for another best friend, Taylor Tyre, 15. He wasn't the baby's father but helped her through the birth and even wrote about changing diapers in his journal. He lovingly called Tyre's 3-month-old daughter Peyton, Piglet.
"He was a certified birth coach," his sister Abby Wood said. "He was proud of that."
Friday evening, swarms of classmates and family friends shared stories, condolences and hugs in the south Arlington home the young man shared with his parents, Jeff and Leslie Wood, and brother Derek.
His parents said that while their hearts are broken over the loss of their son, they are also grieving for 22-year-old Amanda Lucas, who, according to the police report, was driving the vehicle that hit Wood. Police said Lucas attempted evasive action but could not avoid a collision.
"She's just a young girl, and she's devastated," Leslie Wood said. "Our hearts go out to her. I would like to give her a big hug."
Friends have started a memorial of flowers, candles, a teddy bear and a Bible at the site of the accident. Funeral services will be Wednesday in North Richland Hills.
